Schur properties of convolutions of gamma random variables
Sufficient conditions for comparing the convolutions of heterogeneousgamma random variables in terms of the usual stochastic order are established.Such comparisons are characterized by the Schur convexity properties of thecumulative distribution function of the convolutions. Some examples of thepractical applications of our results are given.

We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.
متن کاملOn the Comparison in Mean Residual Life Order of the Convolutions of Geometric Random Variables
Let X1, · · · , Xn and Y1, · · · , Yn be independent heterogeneous geometric random variables with parameters p1 ≤ · · · ≤ pn and q1 ≤ · · · ≤ qn, respectively. We prove that ∑k i=1Xi is larger than ∑k i=1 Yi, for k = 1, · · · , n, in mean residual life order if, and only if, the harmonic mean of p1, · · · , pk is smaller than the harmonic mean of q1, · · · , qk, for k = 1, · · · , n. In this w...
متن کاملThe restricted isometry property for random convolutions
We present significantly improved estimates for the restricted isometry constants of partial random circulant matrices as they arise in the matrix formulation of subsampled convolution with a random pulse. We show that the required condition on the number m of rows in terms of the sparsity s and the vector length n is m & s log s log n.
متن کاملRandom Variables , Distributions and Expectation 1 Random Variables
We’ve used probablity to model a variety of experiments, games, and tests. Throughout, we have tried to compute probabilities of events. We asked, for example, what is the probability of the event that you win the Monty Hall game? What is the probability of the event that it rains, given that the weatherman carried his umbrella today? What is the probability of the event that you have a rare di...
